Minister Han Changfu met Ms. Elizabeth Truss, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) from UK, in Beijing on Nov. 12, 2015. The two sides exchanged views on deepening bilateral agricultural cooperation.
Minister Han commended the sound momentum of agricultural cooperation between China and UK. He noted that the two sides should make good use of the high-level exchange mechanism of China-UK Joint Committee on Cooperation in Agriculture to upgrade the bilateral agricultural cooperation. To further the bilateral cooperation in agriculture, Minister Han put forward the following suggestions: (1) improve bilateral cooperation mechanisms and deepen mutually-beneficial and pragmatic cooperation; (2) seize the opportunities and create favorable conditions for agricultural trade promotion; and (3) maintain close communication within multilateral frameworks and explore tripartite cooperation modes.
Ms. Truss fully agreed with Minister Han on his suggestions. She expressed the willingness of the British side to join hands with China to implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two states and activities set out in the MOU on strengthening agricultural cooperation between MOA and DEFRA with a view to lifting the bilateral agricultural cooperation to a new height.
MOA Chief Economist Bi Meijia and other senior officials also attended the meeting.
